Labour migration and the systems of social protection: Country report Poland
Although Poland is usually considered a sending country, it attracts some groups of immigrants as well. The author discusses both, the sending and receiving perspectives. There may have been 1.2 million Poles abroad in 2006 with favourite destinations in the United Kingdom, Germany and Ireland. Walczak claims that the 2008 economic crisis has not had a significant effect on migration. It caused a temporary decrease in the level of new migration, but has had no impact on returns. The majority of migrants choose to wait abroad for the end of the crisis. The author expects an increasing immigration to Poland as a result of administrative and economic changes. At the moment, there are two significant groups of labor migrants in Poland - the Ukrainians and the Vietnamese.
