Short Series on US Migration Topics (III): Undocumented and Documented Migrant Access to Health Care in the US
The growing crisis in the US health care system disproportionately affects immigrants, especially those who have immigrated to the US in recent years. Almost 50 percent of all non-citizens have no access to health care through insurance or state-funded programmes beyond emergency care. These include irregular migrants, adult regular migrants and even some non-citizen children. This short paper provides an overview of the current situation concerning access to health care for undocumented and documented migrants in the US along the backdrop of a health care system that leaves almost 20 percent of its population with neither health insurance, nor access to state health care benefits.
