Greek and Macedonian ethnic groups in the Czech Republic: linguistic aspects of their origins and development

The author examines a number of aspects of Greek immigration in the Czech Republic, but devotes most of his energies to issues related to language. The opening chapter provides an overview of waves of migration from Greece during the 20th century and basic information about the arrival of Greeks in the former Czechoslovakia. The following chapter describes all ethnic and linguistic groups that came to the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic from Greece. The chapter entitled “Social aspects of the lives of immigrants: from isolation to integration” follows the process of integration of Greek immigrants in a new environment. The author explains the policy of isolating Greek immigrants in the former Czechoslovakia during the years following their arrival, re-emigration of Greeks back to their homeland beginning in the 1960s, establishment of a network of Greek ethnic organizations and the foundations of the Greek community’s ethnic identity in the Czech Republic. The second half of the study focuses on language. The author describes the language situation of different generations of Greeks and Macedonians in the Czech Republic. A detailed chapter dealing with language education of children contains for example information about changes made to curriculum based on the international and political developments of the given period. The language-oriented part of the study ends with a chapter covering options of language communication of the individual groups of Greek immigrants. The author also draws attention to the cultural contribution of the Czech Republic’s Greek community. With English summary at the end.
