Current topic: Polish-Ukrainian border and visa regime
International migration has not turned into a major issue of a political debate in contemporary Poland. Some attention has been, however, devoted to the eastern border of Poland and changes in the control of migration in view of the EU enlargement. Two articles and one study are presented here.
Tadeusz Iwanski wrote an article for the Migrationonline.cz on Polish visa policy and the consequences of EU enlargement for Ukraine. Although visas were introduced for Ukrainians travelling to Poland, the visa regime that was put in place in October 2003 can be seen as quite liberal. Still the EU enlargement could lead to a greater isolation of Ukraine in Europe. The topic of Polish-Ukrainian border is approached from a different point of view by Miroslaw Bieniecki. This sociologist studies the borderland as a specific social, political and economic space. Apart from these two articles we present to you a recent study "Monitoring of Polish Visa Policy". It was published by the Stefan Batory Foundation, the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights and the Collegium Civitas.
