Together against racism

Media shapes the form of public discourse of Roma people and defines the way of their perception by broad public. Various studies show that the media portrayal of Roma is negatively stereotypical and consists of various myths. Despite this fact a lot of people are not indifferent to establishing of „antigypsism“ in public discourse, many of them occupying positions of „opinion makers“ – they are able to positively influence opinions of others.

The project aims to use their social capital to fight against these myths and help to change public image of Roma, especially in localities where displays of antigypsism frequently occured.

Media discourse in the localities will be studied to identify local myths about Roma. Network of antiracist opinion-makers will be established and their argumentation basis and ability to put these myths right will be empowered. Local policemen, public servants and secondary school students will acquire an antiracist training. Local Roma initiatives will be identified and their capacity to address broader public will be supported. Methodology for victims of racist hatespeech will be disseminated.
